Biography - Birding MN with a professional guide

John Richardson, Professional Guide

I grew up in the United Kingdom (East Yorkshire). As a small child I was instantly fascinated watching Sir David Attenborough crawling through the jungles of Papua New Guinea in search of Birds of Paradise. I was hooked and a lifetime passion and obsession was born.

I have birded extensively in Europe, and for the last 20 years Minnesota has been my home. I live in Duluth, MN with my wife, 3 boys, 'Scruffy' the dog and one-eyed Guinea Pig 'Bella'!

I guide predominately in MN (especially the Duluth area). I love to tackle the holy trinity of tough bird families, shorebirds, sparrows and gulls, and really enjoy making it easier for folks to become more well-rounded birders. You tell me what you want to see and I will endeavor to make it possible!

Currently, an alternate member on the Records Committee for the Minnesota Ornithologist's Union

2017 recipient of the Brother Thomas Voelker Award  "For Special Achievement in Field Ornithology"

I was the President of the Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society (BLAAS) for 2 years and board member for 6.

Co-led many field-trips for BLAAS.

Trip Leader (Guide) for the Sax-Zim Birding Festival, Meadowlands, MN.

Seasonal Breeding Bird Surveys for MN DNR in Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Todd, Wadena and Crow Wing Counties.

3 month banding & vegetation sampling project in Polk County, MN in 2002 for the US Fish &Wildlife concentrating on Savannah Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow and Bobolink. I also found a Baird's Sparrow near Crookston, MN (which was 1 of 2 birds found that year) and the last documented occurrence of this species in MN.
